The Hypocrisy of the Black Lives Matter Movement

Black lives matter. Of course, they do. But it is now abundantly clear that the lives, safety and dignity of Black men, women and children is not really what drives organizers of the Black Lives Matter movement.

That is a shame.

The world has been fed a bill of goods about BLM’s goals. Now we see they are about creating civil unrest and nothing more. We should have realized after one of its co-founders proudly declared she is a “trained Marxist.Marxism, by definition, “encourages worker revolution to overturn capitalism in favor of communism.”

BLM Co-Founder Patrisse Cullors, “Trained Marxist”

The BLM website says the group, “builds power to bring justice, healing and freedom to Black people.” Really? Then why haven’t they mobilized in hotspot neighborhoods where Blacks are most frequently victimized?
In New York, BLM organizers concentrate on painting their name on streets yet do nothing to help stop the ever-increasing civilian slaughter of mostly Black citizens. Shootings during the first six months of this year are up 46 percent, homicides increased more than 20 percent. Yet BLM’s cries for defunding the police continue and the Mayor’s response was to cut a billion dollars from the NYPD budget. The department’s anti-crime unit – focused on disarming criminals and curbing violent crime in mostly minority neighborhoods – was disbanded.
In what world does that make sense?
The latest shock to New Yorkers came when a 18-month-old baby boy, Davell Gardner, was senselessly shot and killed at a Brooklyn barbecue. The shooting also left three adult men wounded. All the victims were black, police suspect the shooters were too.

A Reward Offered for Davell’s Killer

“They [are] talking about ‘Black Lives Matter,’” said Davell’s grieving grandmother, “but black lives don’t matter because black people are trying to kill other black people.” Samantha Garner added what we are all thinking, “It needs to stop! Catch the bastards!”
In Chicago, where more than 100 mostly black people were shot by civilians over a recent weekend, one local pastor said it’s an “open season” killing field. Nearly two thousand Chicagoans have been shot so far this year, hundreds fatally, and, yes, the majority of victims and known assailants are black.
So where is the Black Lives Matter movement in Chicago to try to curb this trend? Has BLM piled into the Windy City to marshal local ministers, community leaders and concerned citizens to try to combat the carnage against black Americans? No.
In Minneapolis, authorities report at least 116 people were shot in the four weeks following the death of George Floyd. Recently, there were three gang related shootings in one day, one in the majority black neighborhood of north Minneapolis where 50 children at football practice (ages 5 to 14) were pinned down. One eyewitness, a mother, posted a chilling video saying the shooters obviously had “no regard for human life.” Luckily, no child was shot.

Carrie Boomer Heinrich posted a chilling Facebook video describing the North Minneapolis shootout. 50 kids, 48 were black, according to Heinrich.
Carrie Heinrich’s Son Caught in Crossfire at Football Practice

Did Black Lives Matters come in to help soothe the psychic wounds of those mostly black children or to mobilize grownups to guard against another incident? No.
In Atlanta, at the burned-out Wendy’s restaurant where BLM gathered after police killed a black man who shot at them with a taser, another tragedy. An 8-year-old black child was fatally shot as she rode by in a car. It was yet another mindless black-on-black shooting. Her father later told the criminals, “You killed a child. She didn’t do nothing to nobody! Black Lives Matter? You killing your own.”

Secoriea Turner, 8 years old, – Senselessly Shot in Atlanta

The mantra of Black Lives Matter is now part of the American lexicon. All clear-thinking citizens embrace it and the idea that violent police tactics need to be abolished. Embracing those ideals and the BLM organization are two very different things.
The movement – funded with multiple millions of dollars donated by well-meaning corporations, celebrities and concerned people – is fatally flawed. BLM lacks true leadership, fiscal transparency and an explicit mission statement.
To be viable the organization must condemn the violence perpetrated in its name, the illegal occupations, the burning and looting, the vandalism so frequently seen. So far, not a peep from their self-described Marxist leadership.
Remembering the lessons from the righteous civil rights era of the 50‘s and 60’s I often wonder what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. or Rosa Parks would think about today’s movement for racial justice. I believe they would be greatly disappointed.

In the first few days after George Floyd, there was near unanimous agreement on all sides that the cop was criminally wrong. We could have built on that unity of all parties to make real changes that don’t compromise public safety. Then, BLM and Antifa stepped in. We can’t have unity, after all. Their goal was to take advantage of the situation and drive a wedge in that unity. So far, they have achieved their goal, at least phase 1…

Totally agree with you. As a black American, I find BLM disgraceful, shameful, underhanded, and opportunistic. It angers me that these politicians are using us to cause social unrest and to destroy our country, and it also shames me that so many of us (Americans in general) are falling for this crap.
I think you have the right idea here… the only thing I might suggest is maybe, when you can, bridging that gap and reaching out to them. Invite them to a barbecue… maybe some time, have some coffee… send over some extra fruit you might have… say Hi when you see them, chat a bit… strengthen the ties within your community and reinforce our position as Americans, as all in this together. Stay away from political debates and just see if you can ever just strike up an over-the-fence friendship that could one day blossom into something stronger.
There is a war going on against the American people that has been waged by the corrupt within our media and our government… and that war will only be won within our communities… when we all stand strong together and refuse to buy into the fear, hate, and ignorance that is raging through our country on a much grander and aggressive scale than Coronavirus is.
    Stay Safe!!!

Your strident insistence that BLM turn its focus inwards, to fix the ills of the confined ghettos of our country seems to blindly miss the fact that the actual Land of Opportunity and Equality actually lies outside those very ghettos – and is essentially controlled by politicians, police and the ’norms’ of White-like-me Americans. Change in the ghettos can only occur when the social forces that confine them are….changed.

    That change is called revolution.

Ok Eredmon, I read it. You say it’s an attempt to bring notice. I say it is just as its title implies. An attempt to vilify a movement that is about justice and equality. The story cites examples that collectively, are a hyperbole, implying these people are incompetent and inferior. It’s a divisive racist scheme that bigots have used for hundreds of years. Nothing new here from this white author. An attempt to create a new conservative vision that fits their superior mindset. It gets the minds off of, a white racist cop kneeling on a black man’s neck for eight minutes. After 400 years of racial injustice we all need to collectively acknowledge that BLM.

    Diane,

I read your article in Noozhawk regarding Black Lives Matter and wanted to provide my thoughts.

The damage, destruction, and shootings are all real. The people who cause the violence are not reflective of the BLM movement any more than those who kill abortion providers, or hold guns at people walking by the street, or call the police on Black people living are reflective of all conservatives or Republicans. A small percentage of individuals who do terrible things should not be equated with the majority of peaceful well-intentioned people.

I do not know who committed many of the killings in the past few weeks. They could be gang members, people who are desperate following the loss of jobs and income, or simply criminals taking advantage. I do know that people who want to sow conflict, animosity, and rage are very effective in our society right now as we are all living through very challenging times.

How can we unite people towards common positive goals and make our society stronger now?

Diane, Congratulations on your editorial published in this morning’s Albuquerque Journal. My wife and I totally agree with you. BLM has completely missed the target.

The leaders are not doing anything to help the Black People. Also both the two Black men killed by the police in Minneapolis and Atlanta were proven criminals. To be sure Floyd did not deserve to be killed by the police but he did refuse to get into a police car, he was on drugs which were on his person ( a parole violation) and he was thought to be passing counterfeit money. Somehow the press missed all this.

The Black man shot in Atlanta was on parole for child molesting. He also totally disregarded the police orders and was sleeping drunk in his car, another parole violation. I just can not go along with the press making these two Black men out to be heros! Little would have been mentioned in the press if both men would have been white.

You need to know I have a 9 year old adopted Black Grandson living in NYC and I grew up in Albuquerque where I had more friends of color than white friends. I know many wonderful Black people and have also worked with wonderful Black men and women through my 50 years in Medicine in NC, MN and NM.

Diane, well said. Lived in Chicago my entire life and same thing even now. All of these horrible shootings involve one another and I’ve seen attempts at rebuilding these neighborhoods and the community sets the businesses and the very building they live in on fire so they can loot. I also grew up in these neighborhoods and I never understood why you would choose to destroy your own community. BLM is being head by a woman who supports this very destruction. The majority of Americans understand what the Black Lives Matter movement is about. According to Pew Analysis, 64% of all adults support it, which is about 200 million people. Considering the magnitude of these numbers and the outrage over George Floyd’s modern-day lynching, there has been very little violence. Peaceful protesting has been the norm across the country as it was in our town. But when we watch the news, it’s easy to lose perspective. The negative gets our attention so that’s what the media gives us. And there are always a few deceptive agitators on the streets. Their goal is to demonize this movement and divide us.

Diane Dimond is also a deceptive agitator. Her platform, as a syndicated writer of political columns, is, for us, our local newspaper. Over the course of two months, three of her opinions were published. Collectively, they attempted to promote fear while demonizing and illegitimatizing the BLM movement.

On June 9th, she gave us “Enemies of the state.” She said enemies are among the BLM supporters. And she called them the left-wing, the radicals, the terrorists, Antifa, and the people who hate capitalism. On Jun 30th, “Crimes Against Common Sense” was her number 2. This time, Dimond was more brazen as she planted her divisive ideals in the form of questions. She wrote, … “Why isn’t it OK to state the obvious that ‘all lives matter’? And, let’s consider the recent move to destroy our history. …(Their) radical ideas like disbanding law enforcement, criminal takeovers of inner cities and controlling others’ conversations is just plain foolish.” And finally, on July 18th, she wrote, “Hypocrisy of the Black Lives Matter Movement.” Dimond mentions several cases of blacks killing blacks that she calls, “Shameful” and said, … “They have no regard for life” …. She labels supporters of BLM as Marxists that want to overturn capitalism in favor of communism. She ended her last column by saying, … “I often wonder what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. or Rosa Parks would think about today’s movement for racial justice. I believe they would be greatly disappointed.”

Well, Diane Dimond, I believe our founders would be greatly disappointed in your divisive columns. For they, too, were treated unequally, and the British refused to address their grievances. So, in the first sentence of our Declaration of Independence, our founders demanded “equal station,” which in their words, “the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them.” To achieve it, a little tea was spilled, lives were sacrificed in the Revolution, but in the end the foundation was laid for basic human rights for all. Now, 244 years later, we are still aspiring to ensure everyone has “what nature’s God entitle them.” So, isn’t it unAmerican and unChristian to not embrace this next progressive step in democracy? Americans are united and our unifying message is “Black Lives Matter” and, there are no “BUTS” about it.
